This year, MTN RDY Ski Athlete and guide Noah Howell and Dylan Freed will be working in collaboration with the Utah Avalanche Center to provide a "Skills in the Hills" Clinic focusing on intermediate backcountry techniques.
The all-day clinic will be held in Big Cottonwood Canyon. All participants will receive full instructions, meet-up location, and a schedule for the day of. Lunch is provided, and participants are all invited to an apres-ski happy hour at the famed Hog Wallow near the base of Big Cottonwood after class.
Dates Offered: January 5th and January 12th, 2018
Introductions: level of experience, training, goals for class, backcountry goals
Resources/tools: books, courses, UAC, WB maps, Phone, Inreach, GPS, Instagram.
Gear: beacons, shovel, probe, airbag, skis, skins, first aid, repair kit
Avalanches: What they are, how they form, signs, how do we avoid
Snowpack: pits, observations, test slopes, ski cut, cornice drops
Group Dynamics: heuristic traps, partners, red flags, trust
Planning a day: setting goals to align with conditions, maintaining awareness, changing plans.
Terrain: choosing “safe” routes, audibles, travel protocols
Weather: changing conditions during day, forecasting/predicting
CANCELLATIONS AND REFUND POLICY:
For cancellations made 30 days or more before the first day of the program, refunds will be given for the amount paid, less a $30.00 administration fee.
For cancellations made between 30 days before the first day of the program, 50% of the course fee will be refunded.
Cancellations made 15 days or less before the first day of the program will not be eligible for refunds.
