Train Smarter, Not Harder
I’m sure you’ve heard this before but do you really know what it means? As running coach, I adhere to the 80/20 rule of training in both my personal coaching business as well as with the MTN RDY RUN program. The 80/20 rule states that 80% of your weekly miles or training load should be considered an easy effort while 20% should be above an easy effort. This is the number one hardest concept that new athletes in my personal coaching business have to buy in to. Most of us everyday athletes don’t know how to quantify what easy or hard means in our training and end up running harder than an easy effort most of the time. This is to the detriment of our training as we end up overtrained, under rested, hitting plateaus in fitness gain and never maximizing that aerobic endurance base that is so important to establish before we work on things like speed, power and stamina. It’s important to know what constitutes a true easy effort for you as it will be a pace or heart rate that is likely different than your training buddy. At MTN RDY RUN, we put you through 2 weeks of testing before being placed in the right training program for you. During this testing period we are able to tell you exactly what your easy and hard efforts are and how to measure them. Sticking to the right intensities during different workouts while maintaining the 80/20 rule is where you will find the most progress and enjoyment in your training.
