Balance Issues During Single Leg Exercises
A common issue with athletes of all ages is the ability to maintain balance during single leg exercises. Here are a few tips to help maintain your balance:
- Keep your feet about shoulder width apart. If your feet are too close together (think walking on a tight rope) your balance will be compromised.
- Be sure to flex your glutes on both sides. The glute medius is supposed to contract to stabilize the leg and pelvis in a single leg stance. The glutes have a bad habit of forgetting how to contract if they aren’t reminded consistently.
- Be sure to maintain a tight core. Either draw in (pull your belly button into your spine) or flex (think taking a punch to the gut).
