Introduction to Backcountry Skiing with Noah Howell

COST: $250 per person

This one and a half day intensive workshop in the Wasatch Mountains with a focus on functional knowledge of how to safely climb and ski in the mountains. This course is designed for beginners looking to gain real world experience, or as a refresher for intermediate backcountry skiers. Together we will go through all the steps to intelligently plan and safely execute a day of touring from start to finish.

You must have

  • Touring setup on skis

  • Skins that are cut and fit to ski

  • Beacon (with full battery life), Shovel, and Probe

  • Comfortable clothes to be outside for 6+ hours

  • Lunch - You are responsible for your own lunch

TIME: Night Before (Jan 9th / Jan 23rd) 6:00 - 8:00 PM in Classroom | Day 2 - (Jan 10th & 24th) 8:00AM - 3:00 PM OUTSIDE

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

-Group dynamics and human factors

-Cover the digital resources available for forecasting and planning in the Wasatch

-Choosing where to ski, lining  up conditions with your objectives

-Getting gear dialed, from touring equipment to rescue gear

-Terrain management and route finding

-Good communication, working with partners, more group dynamics and human factors

-Real world avalanche awareness and snowpack assessment

-Rescue scenarios and drills

Steep Skiing Clinic

COST: $175 per person

TIME: 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM

*Prerequisite - This course is designed advanced and experienced skiers looking to take their skills to the next level. You must be comfortable skiing on 40 degree plus snow slopes in order to even sign up for this course. Please contact us if you have any questions about your skill level and what is required to enter this course.

This full day workshop will be broken down into three different sections.

  1. Lesson 1: Steep skiing is all in your head - the mental side of tackling intimidating terrain, visualization, scouting lines, and preparation

  2. Lesson 2: Proper technique puts you in control. - hand position, eyeline, hop turning, pole planting, and proper positioning

  3. Lesson 3: On high-stakes lines, everything matters more. - risk assessment, breathing patterns, fall lines, and bailout options

You must have

Skinning - An Introduction to Traveling Uphill

COST: $99.00

TIME: 8:00 AM - Noon

There is no prerequisite for this course. The intention of this workshop to get beginner - intermediate backcountry skiers comfortable with the basics of traveling uphill “skinning”.

This full day workshop will be broken down into 4 different sections.

  1. Lesson 1: Skin Fitting - sizing skins to skis, trimming skins, tail clips, storage, and maintenance

  2. Lesson 2: Moving Uphill - picking a line, strides, cadence, rhythm, traction, risers, and traveling in packs

  3. Lesson 3: Kickturns - how and when to use a kickturn, navigating in tight terrain, and conserving energy

  4. Lesson 4: Transitions - when and where to transition, efficiency, skin storage, equipment checks

You must have
